Choosing a new boiler isn’t simply a matter of buying the biggest or most expensive model. The right boiler depends on your home, heating system and how much hot water your household needs.

The Three Main Types of Boiler
Most domestic gas heating systems use a combi, system or regular boiler. Each has advantages, but the best choice depends on the property and existing system.
Combi Boiler
A combination boiler provides heating and hot water directly without needing a separate hot-water cylinder.
System Boiler
A system boiler works with a separate hot-water cylinder and can be suitable where stored hot water is required.
Regular Boiler
A regular boiler is commonly found on more traditional heating systems using a hot-water cylinder and separate system components.
Is a Combi Boiler Right for You?
Combi boilers are popular because they are compact and don’t require a separate hot-water cylinder. For many properties they are an excellent choice.
However, a combi isn’t automatically the best choice for every home. The available water supply, number of bathrooms and expected hot-water demand all need to be considered.
This is why I prefer to look at the property and understand how the household uses hot water before recommending a particular boiler.
What I Consider Before Recommending a Boiler
Property Size
The size and type of property and the number of radiators all affect the heating requirement.
Bathrooms
A home with several bathrooms may have very different hot-water requirements from a smaller property.
Existing System
Sometimes retaining the existing type of heating system makes more sense than changing everything unnecessarily.
Water Supply
The available water flow and pressure can be important when considering a combi boiler.
Boiler Location
Where the existing boiler is installed and where a replacement can sensibly be located also needs consideration.
Your Budget
I’ll discuss sensible options rather than assuming that the most expensive boiler is automatically the right one.
What Size Boiler Do I Need?
Boiler output needs to be suitable for the property and the job the boiler has to do. Simply fitting a more powerful boiler isn’t necessarily better.
For a combi boiler, both the heating requirement and the hot-water performance need consideration. For other systems, the heating demand and the way hot water is stored are also important.
Rather than trying to choose purely from an online boiler-size chart, I can assess your particular system and explain the options.
Repair or Replace Your Existing Boiler?
If your boiler has broken down, don’t assume you automatically need a new one. Depending on its age, condition, parts availability and the cost of the repair, keeping your existing boiler may still make sense.
If it can be repaired economically, I will tell you. If replacement is becoming the more sensible option, I’ll explain why and discuss suitable alternatives.

Brand is only one part of choosing a boiler. The correct type and output, suitability for your heating system, warranty conditions, controls and future servicing all matter too.
